episode 78: PART 4 of 4 Crucifying Sin - Chapter 15 - The Christian Life by Sinclair B. Ferguson with Pastor William Shifflett

“Putting sin to death does not mean; the eradication of sin, the same thing as diverting it, changing them into another more socially acceptable harder to discover sin. Are most of the “sins of the flesh” mental rather than physical? What does “put sin to death” mean? Colossians 3:5-11- Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. Where do we mortify sin? 1. In our private lives. Colossians 3:5 - Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Ephesians 4:29 - Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Can Christians live differently at home, at work, and at church? 2. In our everyday experiences. Colossians 3:8 - But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Matthew 15:18 - But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. We are to crucify anger, rage, & slander. Can (should) Christians use filthy language? 3. In the fellowship of the church. Colossians 3:9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices Ephesians 4:15 - Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into Him who is the head, into Christ, What do think about Christians that create disruption and strife within the church? John 17:23 - I in them and You in Me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that You sent Me and loved them even as you loved Me. Is unity in Christ how the world recognize the Church (body of Christ)? How? 1. Recognize sin for what it is. Colossians 3 5 - Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. Dr Ferguson talks about suppression and repression. What do these terms mean? How are they different? How do they apply to our Christian life? (Suppression involves rejecting the opportunity to do something, repression means denying that we want to do it.) 2. Bring your sin into the light of God’s presence. Colossians 3:6 - On account of these the wrath of God is coming. Romans 1:18 - For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. When we look to the cross and see the reproach of our Lord, God’s wrath being poured out upon Him, and hear Him cry out “My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me; how can we not look at our sin and not want to put it to death? 3. Recall the shame of past sin. Colossians 3:7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. Should we look back and take our Spiritual temperature? Romans 6:21 - But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. Philippians 3:7 - But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Why would any Christian want to continue in what is in their past? 4.
