CONMEBOL

Now, this week’s English for football phrase is ‘CONMEBOL’, which is the name of the South American football organisation. Now, of course this word isn’t an English word but it’s coined from three different words in Spanish. This phrase is made up of three words: Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol – the South American Federation of Football. This federation is in charge of organising the World Cup qualifiers for the ten countries in South America as well as the Copa América, that’s the South American Cup that is played every four years. The ten teams in CONMEBOL are: Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile. CONMEBOL.

* Example: The CONMEBOL qualifying section for the FIFA World Cup is a tough test of endurance as teams have to play 18 matches over two years and only the top four teams qualify directly for the World Cup finals.
