It’s the last day of 2022 and in my country Nigeria, and in churches around the world, multitudes will gather for cross-over services and night vigils into the New Year. As one pastor put it, it’s one day in the year that brings a huge crowd of people into church, many of whom, will thereafter, most likely not hear another sermon for the rest of the year, and will put everything about God on hold, till the next cross-over service.
Indeed, the truth is that for some people, Christianity is a part-time venture, and the word is often nothing more than an option to be ticked off on an official form. However, from the bible, it’s clear that the Christian walk is meant to be a daily, intentional experience. Scripture says our spirits are renewed daily (2 Cor 4:16). It says to exhort one another daily (Hebrews 3:13), and to take up our cross daily (Luke 9:23). The Christian life is a daily life, and in spite of whatever we do for a living, our primary duty every single day, as long as we qualify to be called human, is to fear God and keep His commandments. (Ecc 12:13).
I pray as the Psalmist does in Psalm 90:12, that God will teach us to number our days, so that we will increase in wisdom. As we start a brand new year tomorrow, may that wisdom enable us take the right steps to make each day in 2023, count for good. May we live, no longer just for ourselves, but intentionally to bring glory to God, in Jesus name, Amen.
