35. Interview with Dr. Kelly Turner Part 1
Today I welcome Kelly A Turner, Ph.D. and New York Times best-selling author of Radical Remission and Radical Hope.
Kelly and I talk about the difference between radical remission and spontaneous healing and the ten key healing factors that cancer survivors have in common. Sure, we can assume that changing diet and lowering stress levels can impact healing but what about factors such as listening to your intuition? For Dr. Turner, intuition was the hardest healing factor for her to understand so she dove into research to see if this could be a legitimate healing factor, spoiler alert, she found numerous studies citing intuition as a healing factor.
According to Dr. Turner, almost all the Radical Remission survivors that she interviewed mentioned doing these same ten things to heal their cancer.
These ten key healing factors for Radical Remission are, in no particular order:
In Radical Remission, Dr. Turner states that these factors are in no particular ranking order — in her research, there was no “clear winner” among the factors. While some people focused more on one factor than others, the majority of the survivors she interviewed did practice all nine of these key factors. These key factors are now considered “hypotheses” — that is, more research is needed to “prove” that these factors improve the chances of healing from cancer or other conditions.
Dr. Turner points out: “I don’t give medical advice, nor do I even give advice. I’m just here to report on my research, and I can certainly say what radical remission survivors would do from a research standpoint.”
Dr. Turner shows how survivors overcame dire circumstances and diagnoses using modalities beyond the conventional treatments of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and other “standard” cancer treatments. Interestingly, seven of these ten key factors that Radical Remission survivors reported using are psychosocial (mental/emotional) factors, while the other three are nutritionally and movement related.
Information About Today’s Guest, Dr. Kelly Turner:
While getting her Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkley, Dr. Turner, a researcher, lecturer, and counselor in integrative oncology, was shocked to discover that no one was studying episodes of radical (or unexpected) remission—when people recover against all odds without the help of conventional medicine, or after conventional medicine has failed. She was so fascinated by this kind of remission that she embarked on a ten-month trip around the world, traveling to ten different countries to interview fifty holistic healers and twenty radical remission cancer survivors about their healing practices and techniques. Her research continued by interviewing over 100 Radical Remission survivors and studying over 1000 of these cases. Her evidence presents nine common themes that she believes may help even terminal patients turn their lives around.
