episode 5: Asleep in Christ - Chapter 17- The Christian Life by Sinclair Ferguson with Pastor William Shifflett

Asleep in Christ - Chapter 17- The Christian Life by Sinclair Ferguson with Pastor William Shifflett

It has been said, “Man is the only creature who knows that he is going to die, and he is desperately trying to forget it.”  Most people don’t like to talk about death, do they?

Every year about sixty million people die in the world. About three million every year die in the U.S..

And the Bible says; they all will live forever, either in heaven or hell.

The difference is their relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Is He their Savior or is He their Judge?  Savior or Judge, Pastor the Bible is full of contrasts and divisions isn’t it?

When we talk about death, aren’t we talking about eternity, aren’t we talking about eternal hell or eternal heaven?

The Nature of Death. The Bible teaches in Romans 5:12-21, “Death in Adam, Life in Christ”

What is death in Adam? Is it physical death, spiritual death, or both?

What does Jesus teach us about death?

Luke 12:49-53 - I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled!

50 I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished!

51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.

Then let’s go back a little to - Luke 3:16-17 - John(the baptist) answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but He who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in His hand, to clear His threshing floor and to gather the wheat into His barn, but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”

V. 49 - Jesus says, “I came to cast fire on the earth.” That is clearly judgement, correct?

Jesus says, “I would the fire had already started.” That is an amazing comment. Why does Jesus make this comment and what can we learn from it?

V 50 - “I have a baptism to be baptized with” What is the baptism that Jesus is speaking of.

V 51 - Do you think that most Christians think that Jesus came to give peace on earth?

Jesus came to be a divider. Jesus is a divider, He divides the whole world.
