Walk Good: African and Caribbean Folktales

We share African and Caribbean folktales for the enjoyment of those young and young at heart, both at "home" and living in the African/Caribbean diaspora. Stories are retold by our storyteller Kesha Christie, the founder of Talkin' Tales. Our culture has a rich oral tradition and we seek to preserve it by educating and entertaining audiences with stories passed down from generation to generation.

episode 5: Latin Folktales - Dominican Republic Independence


The Dominican Republic Celebrates their independence on February 27th.

In this episode we celebrate.

The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern 2 thirds of Hispaniola the second largest island of the greater Antilles.  It's culture is a mix of European, African and Taino.  The languages spoken are Spanish the official language as well as creole English, Haitian creole and Samana English.

In the Caribbean food connects us, let's talk about the Dominican Republic's National Dish. It is called La Bandera it is white rice and beans like (tin beans in sauce) and chicken served with avocado.


Fun Facts about the Dominican Republic:

1. Santo Domingo - the capital is the oldest city in the Americans It is the oldest European settlement

2. Defy Gravity in Barahona! - In southern western part of the DR town called Polo.  You can challenge gravity at the magnetic pole (El Polo Magnetico). If you stop your card and put it in natural downhill the car will roll uphill.

3. Unique, Precious stones - Amber & Larimer can not be found anywhere else in the world

4. The highest peak in the Caribbean Pic Duarte - DR has the lowest elevation in the Caribbean it is also home to the highest elevation in the region 3,087 meters altitude.
