This episode narrates the story of Helle Crafts, a flight attendant who had a rocky marriage with her husband, Richard Crafts, who had flown covert missions in Laos. After seeking a divorce from Richard, Helle went missing in 1986, and her husband gave inconsistent statements about her whereabouts. The police were initially dismissive about her disappearance, but detective Keith Mayo launched his own investigation, and eventually, the police became involved. Richard's credit card history revealed he rented a wood chipper and a U-Haul truck shortly before Helle went missing. The police found evidence, including wood chips, blonde hair, and a painted red nail, that led to the discovery of small bone fragments and Helle's crown tooth. Renowned forensic investigator Dr Henry Lee was brought in to analyze the evidence, and he discovered blood on the mattress and bathroom towels that matched Helle's blood type, suggesting she had been struck by a blunt-force object. Richard was arrested and tried for his wife's murder, and he was eventually convicted, becoming the first person in the US to be convicted of murder without a body.
