Bark beetles have decimated millions of hectares of conifer forests in Europe in recent years and are attracted to trees that have a certain partner fungi already eating the tree. When the certain fungi starts metabolizing the spruce resin compounds they release pheromones to attract the beetle which starts their symbiotic relationship.
