EP19: Will Baldy, DoP

Hinter dem Mikrofon begrüße ich diesmal Will Baldy, DoP von „The Pact“ und Co-DoP von Netflix‘ „The Sandman“ sowie der Disney+-Serie „Willow“. Will erzählt uns von den Herausforderungen des Genres Fantasy und welche technischen Kniffe er einsetzt.
Will Baldy wuchs in einem kleinen Dorf im ländlichen Südwesten Englands auf. Schon im frühen Jugendalter drehte er eigene Kurzfilme, fotografierte und ging viel ins Kino. Prägend für seinen späteren Wunsch Kameramann zu werden, waren tatsächlich dann nicht die Klassiker des Genres aus den 1970er, 1980er und 1990er Jahren, sondern die Pixar-Filme um die erste „Toy Story“ herum. Für ihn kam es durch die ländliche Prägung lange zeit gar nicht infrage zum Film zu gehen, weil das einfach fern von seiner Lebenswelt war.
Praktische Arbeit statt StudiumAuf dem College belegte Will zwar praktische Filmkurse, wollte aber partout keine Bücher über das Filmemachen lesen. Das war an der Uni ein Problem. Stattdessen widmete Will sich lieber der Praxis. Ab 2016 arbeitete er als Zweiter Assistent und fasste 2020 von einem Tag auf den anderen den Entschluss, als DoP zu arbeiten. Über viele Kurzfilme und praktscihe Arbeit als Second Unit DoP machte Will schließlich mit der BBC- und Peacock-Serie „The Pact“ sein erstes Projekt als DoP.
