The Create Unknown

The Create Unknown interviews the most successful online creators to reveal how they got started and how they keep going. iDubbbz. Vsauce. Casey Neistat. iJustine. PsychicPebbles. We talk to the YouTubers, artists, and streamers who exemplify our mantra of “Make Something. Mean Something.” Part high-level analysis, part hopelessly stupid, Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor from Vsauce2 dissect the complex business, the unpredictable drama, and the uncertain future of creating online. We’ll see you in The Create Unknown, Space Cowboys. This week, we’re back to CRUSH YOUR DREAMS. Well, maybe that’s a little extreme. But we ARE here to tell you to get those dreams out of your head and into reality.

Kevin kicks off the episode by bringing up a tweet from friend of the show Justin Whang that sparked this discussion. Whang recently talked about the types of people who consider themselves to be “creatives,” and whether or not they actually make anything. We take that one step further to develop an all new category of person: the dreamer.

After that, Matt rattles off a few strong examples of the types of dreamers he’s encountered in his life, and how he avoids becoming one himself. From writers, to gamblers, and even entrepreneurs – this idea extends much further than just making content for YouTube.

Then we think back on another TCU alumnus whose increasingly impressive fitness journey exemplifies our newfound theory: Art from TheGamerFromMars. Matt talks about the different levels of intentionality in this whole process, and Kevin ties it all together with some recent NFL heckling on Twitter.

There is one nice thing about being a dreamer though – you never have to stop feeling good about your ideas. And while that might be true to a degree, there are some pretty major pitfalls that a line of thinking like that can lead to. You never know what you’re missing out on until you actually DO THE THING.

Kevin finishes off the episode with a discussion about the surprising lack of employment in a lot of industries these days, and how that compares to the strong aversion to ‘grind culture’ that has popped up in the last couple years. We talk about the importance of a solid workflow, the primer shortage for ammunition in the US, and Matt even manages to work in a solid Ayn Rand reference.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in on Discord this week, and thanks especially to our ever-supportive patrons. We’ll be back next week!
