The Lakers stars played well, LeBron James and Anthony Davis both.
But in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 128-112 win over the Grizzlies in Memphis, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven first round series, it was the supporting cast that brought them home. Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura and D'Angelo Russell all were big, earning critical buckets from inside and out as the Lakers pulled away late. An injury to Ja Morant's hand left the door open for the purple and gold, and they didn't just walk through, they blew the entire wall out. Had to happen, too, because if the Lakers don't they blow a huge opportunity.
(Morant, by the way, seemed to make himself questionable for Game 2.)
It was a resounding win for a team that five days ago looked really tired. The rest, clearly, helped a lot. And it was a validation of the depth added by the front office at the deadline.
Huge game, huge win. Lakers are in the driver's seat early.
