Drag, the art of transforming yourself into a beautiful creature of your own imagination, has been around for a long, long time. Even archaeologists discovered evidence that Neanderthals wore jewelry and makeup some 50,000 years ago and made glitter from mica to make themselves to look fabulous.

Many cultures have different names for those who play with gender, but for those who do it for theatrical effect or to entertain, in English, we call them drag queens.

One of the biggest mysteries surrounding the concept of drag is why they hell do we call them drag queens in the first place?

On RuPaul’s Drag Race, Mama Ru said drag was an acronym from Elizabethan theater for DRessed as A Girl, but how would she know? She’s not that old.

Today we introduce you to what may be the real meaning of the term drag queen, and believe it or not, it has nothing to do with Shakespeare.
