FOF #2548 – We Are All Puerto Rican – 11.02.17

More than a month after Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, over 70 percent of the people on the island are still without power and 25 percent don’t have running water. While the government continues to support relief efforts in Texas and Florida, many Americans, and especially Republicans are leaving Puerto Rico to struggle on its own.

Amazingly, artists are coming together to raise funds and awareness- Hamilton on Broadway’s Lin-Manuel Miranda teamed up with major Puerto Rican celebrities to create the song “Almost like Praying” which benefits the Hispanic Federation.

In the drag scene, Phi Phi O’Hara is getting dozens of queens to come together for Queens United/Reinas Unidas, a celebration of drag that will benefit Somos Una Voz, a relief initiative founded by Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. The show is on Nov. 6 in Minneapolis but if you can’t make it, it will be livestreamed by Billboard.

Listen as we chat with Phi Phi O’Hara about why the Jones Act that has been crippling Puerto Rico’s economy for almost one hundred years needs to be lifted.

It’s like USA for Africa, only with drag queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race.
