On March 15, 1972, Francis Ford Coppola's cinematic adaptation of Mario Puzo's best-selling novel The Godfather was released in theaters. The film was a huge hit, the highest grossing of 1972, and went on to be nominated for nine Academy Awards, ultimately winning three including Best Picture.
