While the subgenre of math rock has a lot of people arguing about what it is and isn't, I decided to do a scene show, throwing my hat into the ring. So over about 3 hours, as we do in all of our scene shows, I'll walk you through what I think forms the core of a math rock band/song, talk about the origins of the scene including proto math rockers, explore some of the key players in the scene, talk a bit about how easily bands can be both a math rock band and a post-rock band, and give little waves to the subsubgenres of math metal and mathcore.
As with all scene shows, I claim no sense of authority, simply remind you I'm a guy who does his homework, and knows enough to be dangerous.
So let's cover math rock!
