episode 17: Re-Animating the Archive

This will be part of a two continent performance to launch a new publication, Some Writers Can Give You Two Heartbeats. The session addresses notions of reading as a multi sensory experience, thinking about explorations in assemblage, visual and multimedia production as rooted in a deep and dynamic research process.

  • Liona Nyariri
  • Preston Thompson

Some Writers Can Give You Two Heartbeats is a multi-platform publication edited by Tinashe Mushakavanhu with Nontsikelelo Mutiti using design, motion and audio to animate the archive of Zimbabwean literature. It will be officially launching at the New York edition of 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair (3-5 May 2019). This session will happen simultaneously with the launch of the book. Preston Thompson (lead designer of the project) and Liona Nyariri (research assistant) will show a motion graphic of the book and talk about the publishing process for a new generation of African readers. We think about time in a dynamic way starting with a sense of urgency for knowledge and exposing gaps in the archive and surfacing and amplifying necessary voices and images that might be submerged. We think about books as time based and sequential objects related to video, audio and performance.
