episode 25: Counterspeech - against hatespeech and desinformation

Counterspeech is a concept that developed as a reaction to commonly spread hatespeech online as well as disinformation distributed through social media. What if you rethink the discussion around regulation of hatespeech and it would be revised from a completely different angle - one that was long seen as a tl&dr - on measuring effectiveness and impact of counterspeech. The session will give insights on what we scientifically know on what really impacts users and what doesn't .

Counterspeech is a concept that developed as a reaction to commonly spread Hatespeech online as well as disinformation distributed through social media. It takes into account that many users consume the misconducted expressions and information online – but do not react to it. Counterspeech is the idea to intervent on a broader level without implementing a state-regulatory practice but to have empowered communities that try to deal with it. The debate along hatespeech in the year 2018, with the beginning of the NetzDG was supposed to help fighting the complicated relation between freedom of expression and hatespeech/disinformation online. But what did we learn about the effectiveness of intervention from it? What effectively works against it –  social media plattforms and not even the creators of NetzDG seem to know nor be able to prove it. This session wants to give number crunching a serious test and help to change the perspective on how we look on the function of counterspeech in online debate – by presenting outcome of scientific research on these topics. Why could counterspeech be more effective in fighting hatespeech than regulating laws and what actually helps in dealing with disinformation? Allow the usually overlooked tl&dr part of the discussion some space and you will probably understand that new solutions to this could be  a very refreshing a new perspective – if you just had read the lines in between before..….
