Treating and Preventing Pregnancy Related Symptoms

Quite a few folks are actually surprised to learn that pregnant women are patients here at Tulsa Spine and Rehab. In fact, many healthy, active women become pregnant and come to realize that there is a multitude of beneficial treatment options available to them.

Treating and Preventing Pregnancy Related Symptoms

Obviously, all pregnant women should first check with their obstetrician to make sure there are no counter indications or potential problems with chiropractic and/or osteopathic treatment. From there, we can begin treatment to manage any symptoms associated with the pregnancy. We have been resoundingly successful with treating pregnant women, keeping them mobile and active.

The most common issues for pregnant women are low back pain, lumbopelvic discomfort, and even sciatica-like symptoms. (In past posts, we discussed pain where the sciatic nerve becomes irritated, leading to pain going down the back of the leg.) As with all patients, I will take an assessment of their history to determine what the underlying issue is.

One of the biggest problems with pregnant women is the production of a hormone called relaxin. As the name implies, this hormone relaxes the joints, allowing the pelvis to expand and accommodate the delivery of the baby. The hormone also relaxes all of the ligaments, potentially creating instability. Any areas of instability will then cause increased pressure and irritation on the joints.

This is why it is so it is so important to determine any limitations with mobility, irritation, or dysfunction. Equally as important, we will find areas of the body where we can improve stability. Manipulation is an important tool in a chiropractor’s toolbox that can improve these symptoms.

Additionally, there are three main areas that pregnant women should pay attention to:

Exercise

It’s safe for pregnant women to exercise once they have consulted with their obstetrician. It is extremely beneficial for women to maintain a level of exercise and activity throughout the pregnancy. Not only does it make them feel energized, but it also keeps the joints mobile.

Stretches and gentle warmups should come first, followed by steady exercise such as walking. Depending on the woman’s exercise level prior to the pregnancy, they should continue to participate in the activities they enjoy. Of course, it is very important to first consult with an obstetrician to determine that the exercise is appropriate.

Posture

Pregnant women will go through biomechanical changes, especially with the release of relaxin hormone. As everything begins to loosen up, they might begin bending too much in the back instead of focusing on the knees and hips. As we’ve talked about in past posts, it is important to focus on proper biomechanics. This means making sure you are moving with proper posture while avoiding increased pressure and stress on the low back, the sacroiliac joint, and other portions of the low back.

Diet

Healthy diets are always important, but women should be especially careful to consume the increased nutrients needed during pregnancy.
