Chile's Fishing Industry Who Owns the Seas? Report by Carolina Machhaus
. A controversial fishing law was passed in Chile in December 2012, making life for ordinary fishermen a lot harder. Under the law thousands of kilometers of the country's coastline have been leased to a handful of powerful families for life. These rights can even be passed on to their children. The 80,000 or so small-scale fishermen are now restricted to fishing a 1.5km strip of sea off the coast. Their livelihoods are under threat. Sergio Mayorga is fighting for the law to be revised. He's hoping his actions will help bring a better future.
