- Pay Attention (stay with the person on the edge of their experience)
- Nonjudgement
- Generally embrace the speaker’s perspective
- Concreteness (focus on specifics instead of vague generalities)
- Restatement (repeat what the person said)
- Rephrasing (slightly reword and summarize)
- Reflection (“it sounds like you feel”)
- The Three R’s
- Be comfortable with silence
- Why questions (can be taken as accusatory)
- Quick reassurance (“oh, it’s ok…”)
