episode 17: How To Survive Body Shame

Body shaming is an epidemic. As a culture, we are simple obsessed with size. Particularly when it comes to women’s bodies. From the early days when rounder ‘fertile’ bodies were more revered, to the flat-flapper twenties, the curvy fifties and sixties, the twiggy seventies, the waif-like nineties, and the athletic two-thousands, there has yet to be time in modern history that women haven’t been dictated to in some form or another.   There has yet to be a time when women aren't being "explained" through media portrayals and social culture. And no body is winning, because the target is ever-shifting. It’s no wonder the majority of women are struggling to find their way and feel worthy, constantly being held in comparison to warped, photoshopped, idealistic images portrayed in media all over the world, that continuously represent less than 2% of the female population at any given time (a two-percent who is, as well, being photoshopped even further so even they can’t live up to the ideal). Is the world changing? In small parts, yes. Thanks to major media role models like @thebirdspapaya, who we are welcoming to the @unapologeticallyhershow stage in March, but we still have a long way to go to find our way through the filters and back to each other.   Anna and the ladies get super personal about body shame, talking about the ways in which women of all sizes are struggling... and attempting to create a new dialogue by bringing the shame out from behind change-room doors. We talk media literacy, personal challenges and - as always - we do our very best to stay courageous in the face of some very hard conversations.
