Nakedly Examined Music Podcast

Why do musicians create what they do? Why do they create in that particular way? Mark Linsenmayer (aka songwriter Mark Lint, and host of The Partially Examined Life) talks to songwriters and composers about specific recordings, which are played in full. We cover lyric meanings, writing and recording techniques, arrangements, band dynamics, the stories behind the songs, and even music theory.

NEM#153: Steve Kilbey (The Church) Reveals the Secrets to Being Prolific

Steve has written over 1000 songs across 17 Church albums starting in 1980, 13 solo albums and numerous collaborations. His style is theatrical and psychedelic, and his lyrics aim for “maximum ambiguity.”

We discuss “Love Song Yet to Be Named” by Steve Kilbey and The Winged Heels from The Hall of Counterfeits (2021) and some tunes by The Church: “Another Century” from man woman life death infinity (2017) and “Is this Where You Live?” from Of Skins and Heart (1981). Intro: “Under the Milky Way” from Starfish (1988). We conclude by listening to the title track from Steve’s solo album Sydney Rococo (2018). For more of The Church’s story, buy Steve’s autobiography Something Quite Peculiar. More at thechurchband.net, thetimebeing.com, and see also Steve Kilbey’s bandcamp page.

Another song Steve mentions from the new album is “Arcadia.” Watch The Winged Heels live. Watch the video for “Under the Milky Way.” There’s also a video for “Sydney Rococo.” and one for “Another Century.” Here’s The Church in 2107 playing “Another Century” live at a radio station. Here they are live in 1982 playing “Is This Where You Live?” One of Steve’s side projects I especially like is his duo with Grant McLellan from The Go-Betweens, Jack Frost. His most prolific side project is Kilbey Kennedy.
