Se Jong Cho is a Baltimore-based painter and scientist, whose artistic journey began in 2013 when she discovered the time-stretching power of painting, opening portals to new worlds and experiences. Embracing the belief that art is a magical operation, Se Jong shares her imaginative interpretations of the world through scientific, engineering, and philosophical lenses. Her work communicates with observers through the ambiguity of colors and shapes, inviting a synthesis of multiple life experiences. Beyond her artistic endeavors, Se Jong also contributes to the scientific community, studying sediment and water movement's impact on the environment, blending her passions for art and science in a captivating exploration of their intersection.
As we uncover today’s episode:
Se Jong Cho combines her passion for art and science in her work. She primarily works with acrylic on canvas and recently had a solo show at the Catalyst Gallery in Baltimore. Se Jong also works as a scientist, studying sediment and water movement in landscapes and how it impacts the environment. She believes that art has the power to foster imagination and empathy, which are essential for addressing environmental problems. Se Jong is currently working on a paper that explores the connection between environmental art and quantifiable environmental outcomes. She is also planning a new show called "Extraction" that will bring together scientists and artists to discuss environmental issues.
