LeBron Sits Out as the Lakers Lose in San Antonio. Plus, Fans Cross a Line with Russell Westbrook.

No, Lakers fan, you are not allowed to have nice things, or enjoy anything for more than 24 hours. That's about as long as people had to absorb the awesomeness of LeBron James and his 56 point effort Saturday to beat the Warriors at the Crypt. Monday, his left knee swelled up like a balloon, and he had to sit out. Will he play Wednesday in Houston? Nobody knows.

So the very, very shorthanded Lakers took the floor against San Antonio sporting a lineup that probably wouldn't win 25 games in an 82 game season and put up a good fight before ultimately falling short. Losing sucks, no question, but in some ways it was a more enjoyable game to watch, with Carmelo Anthony doing a lot of old-man-at-the-Y stuff, Austin Reaves making nice plays, THT picking up some nice buckets and so on.

But really, what does it mean that once again the Lakers are playing without LeBron and Anthony Davis... again?

When it was over, attention turned back to Russell Westbrook and the incredibly challenging year he's had, including news Monday from his wife on social media that she's received threats to the family because of how poorly this whole thing has gone. Westbrook responded after the game, and it's a moment worthy of conversation. Meanwhile, a report in The Athletic notes the relationship between Westbrook and the coaching staff hasn't improved. All signs continue to point to this partnership ending after only a season.

Finally, The Athletic reports that the Lakers (specifically Jeanie Buss) are receiving advice and counsel from Magic Johnson and Phil Jackson. No surprise there, given how insular the team has been. Kobe Bryant, says the report, would have been offered a more formal front office job. His memory is inexorably intertwined with Rob Pelinka.

It is an incredibly insular organization, which is fine when things are going well, but deeply problematic when they're not.
