Nakedly Examined Music Podcast

Why do musicians create what they do? Why do they create in that particular way? Mark Linsenmayer (aka songwriter Mark Lint, and host of The Partially Examined Life) talks to songwriters and composers about specific recordings, which are played in full. We cover lyric meanings, writing and recording techniques, arrangements, band dynamics, the stories behind the songs, and even music theory.

NEM#187: Eszter Balint Interprets Her Past

Eszter is an actor/musician, gaining initial fame starring in Jim Jarmusch’s first major film Stranger Than Paradise (1984). She has released four albums of often autobiographical songs since 1998.

We discuss “The First Day” (and end by listening to “Freaks”) from I Hate Memory (2022) feat. Stew and Syd Straw; this album has been made into a stage show. We then turn to “Exit at 63” from Airless Midnight (2015) and “Almost Gone” from Flicker (1998). The introduction is the theme from her debut film, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You.” For more, see eszterbalint.com.

Watch the video for The “First Day.” Watch Eszter performing “Exit at 63” live. Here’s another live track from that duet show so you can see some of her violin playing.

Here’s a clip of Eszter in Stranger Than Paradise, in Trees Lounge, and much more recently on the TV show Louie.
