episode 226: [REPLAY] Why I quit the APTA

On today’s episode, I talk about why I quit the APTA. Did I just trigger you?

The APTA has actually done a lot of good for us. Without them, we wouldn’t ’ be where we are as a profession, because they are our ONLY unified voice for legislation! And I was a member for years, all the way up until 2020. Let me tell you why I decided not to renew my membership. When I was a member, I identified problems and offered solutions to do things better! But it always fell on deaf ears. No one would listen.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t be a member, and I’m not saying they’re bad! But it was no longer a fit for me.

If you find a problem but do nothing to fix it, then you’re just complaining.

The APTA is a big ship that takes a long time (too long) to change directions. There are people willing to stand up and help out, but there is a lack of feedback provided to those who DO offer their time and services to better the organization. After a certain point, it becomes obvious the your effects aren’t appreciated.

We shouldn’t be relying on referrals from physicians and the APTA doesn’t seem to be on board with that idea.

The final straw was the lack of guidelines and support when we were dealing with COVID. We had no advice on screening questions, how to pivot out businesses, how to utilize Telehealth. NOTHING!

This was a time to lead and the APTA dropped the ball.

I didn’t get he value from my membership in the APTA. That’s what it boils down to. If the value is there, regardless of what it is, you stay.

We talk about:

-the good the APTA has done

-where they’ve fallen short

-being open to new ideas

-falling short on feedback

-relying on physician referrals

-lack of transparency

-getting the value you expect
