Chair Of Clare Ogra Fianna Fail Fearful Increasing Hospitality VAT Could Drive Emigration

The Chair of Clare Ógra Fianna Fáil is warning that increasing the VAT in the hospitality sector during a cost of living crisis could have a severe knock-on effect. Research commissioned by the Irish Tourism Industry Confederation found that 24,000 workers in the hospitality sector could lose their jobs if the special VAT rate applied to the sector is increased to 13.5% at the end of February as planned. Former hospitality worker in Lahinch, Aoíbhann de Burca Quinlivan says staff rosters will be first hit if the move goes ahead. Aoíbhann is fearful that increasing pressure on the hospitality sector could lead to job losses, business closures and even push the younger generation to emigrate.
