Episode #20 Bootleg Biology and Brew Bracket

It’s Episode #20 and we are talking with Jeff Mello founder of Bootleg Biology, and Mike Sale the Co-Founder of Brew Bracket.

What is Bootleg Biology?

Bootleg Biology is an open source yeast (and wild bugs) project whose goal is to create the world’s most diverse library of microbes for the creation of fermented foods and beverages.

All microbes are sourced and isolated from “bootleg” sources such as: backyards, orchards, kombucha, yogurt, honey, fruit, bottle dregs, and whatever else we can get our hands on. Enthusiasts contribute their yeast or house cultures to the project, with the shared goal of enriching the Bootleg Biology community’s  access to diverse microbes. Bootleg Biology is the first organization to pioneer the collection and cultivation of official yeast strains for U.S. cities and states as part of its Local Yeast Project, beginning with the original S. arlingtonesis.

Education of basic DIY techniques related to the science of fermentation, specifically the capturing and isolating of yeast is at the core of Bootleg Biology’s mission.

To further our mission and expand our library we created the Backyard Yeast Wrangling Tool Kit which includes everything the experimental homebrewer needs to capture wild bugs, create agar plates, and isolate wild yeast. You may also purchase one of their homebrew cultures online here: http://bootlegbiology.com/product-category/cultures/

Brew Bracket

What is Brew Bracket?

Brew Bracket is a beer tasting party in a box. Pick 8 beers to compare in a head to head tasting tournament event.

How does it work?

Gather up a group of friends and 8 different beers (a 6-pack or growler of each works best) of a similar style for the tasting tournament. The Host Guide will help you lead your guests through the bracket-style tournament where everyone blindly tastes two beers at a time and votes for a favorite. The orange and gray pitchers and tasting glasses help keep the tasting blind throughout the bracket. In the end, each beer in the bracket is revealed and a winner is declared!

Ryan Coyle and Mike Sale – We’re just two guys who created a 400-person beer tasting tournament event in 2011 in an effort to find the “best beer”. Over four years, we’ve hosted 10 events. We’ve helped over 3,500 people explore 120+ local beers they may not have otherwise tried. There’s so much variety in beer now, everyone needs a way to find out what they like best. Brew Bracket lets you do that, in the comfort of your own home with your own friends. Now, people don’t have to wait for us to host another event.

Jason Glunt from Salud stopped by and talked about Funkonia and participated in our NC IPA BrewBracket.
