Refugee Week 2018


Sunday the 17th to Saturday the 23rd of June is Refugee Week in Australia. This week, we look at the stories of those who have settled in Australia. Ezechiel Ntirenganya, a Burundian who works with AMES Australia, an organisation that provides settlement services to newly arrived refugees and humanitarian entrants since 2005 talks about the importance of this week for Burundian refugees.

Interview: A former Karen refugee to a Master of Pharmacy university student


Thoo Lei Phan is a 23 year's old Karen girl recently graduated in Bachelor of Medical Science at Western Sydney University. Born in Karen State of Burma and grew up in Noh Poe refugee camp in Thailand, Thoo Lei Phan arrived in Australia in earlier December of 2006 together with her family. She was 11 years old when she first arrived and with very limited English language skills. However, she is now making her way to Master of Pharmacy student...

On 18th of June the Karen communities in Canada and USA rally for peace in Burma/Myanmar. Thousands attended the rally and they call to the governments to support peace in Myanmar, provide more aids for internally displaced person and refugees along Thai-Burma border, and other ethnic group areas. The SBS Karen spoke to Slone Phan, the Chairperson at Karen Community of Canada who is also one of an organizer of the event.
