Hooray, it's Frauenstimmen Friday!

Folge 1098: #Japanuary2021 Nr. 7 Kinoshitas ARMY (Rikugun) feat. Schneeland
2021-02-16 (duration 53m)

#Japanuary 2021 Teil 10: Crazy Thunder Road/Burst City (feat. Untersammlung)
2021-02-21 (duration 1h44m)
#Japanuary-Spezial

Zitat

Learning is not compulsory… neither is survival

W. Edwards Deming

CLP116: Audionotizen vom Audio-BarCamp 2021
2021-05-23 (duration 1h54m)

Am 29. April 2021 lief das erste Audio only BarCamp, Kurzform „AudioBC21“.

54:01 Yeah, yeah, that ah, but but again there was little little reception on why can't we celebrate black art black culture. It doesn't need to be a statue of a person I think maybe we've moved on to society. We don't need to. We don't need to glorify people on statues so much anymore. But glorify.
44:12 Often Think when when you're applying applying for a role or a job with the cv you want that cv to sell you and then what what we're doing now is we're we're we're blind or we're we're anonymizing Cvs we're removing all these details so people are just becoming almost like cold facts and that. Almost stifles. The people's ability to sell which is a very human nature when you're trying to go for roles. But then we often end up hiring the best salesperson. Not the best manager or leader or technician if you're not careful.
13:30 I 100 percent agree with that that sentiment you touched on something there which is 1 of my bugbears this bullshit of meritocracy this perceived who is the best person for the role and we've seen it over over generations that we tend to promote technicians.

    [transcript]
59:24 Fantastic! Thank you so much. So Marcus tell us how people can get hold of you. Um, where's the best place to do that.
27:59 And because what we were looking for There was the common ground. We weren't turning up defending our empire or defending our dogma and and you know I think far far too. Little attention is focused on diversity equity and inclusion. Not fan of equality I am a fan of equity. It needs to be fair, the equality piece I think is a distraction and what I think is really important is that we um draw the best out of people and allow them to do their best work every day. That means when they come they give massive Discretionary effort.
41:01 There is definitely an element of that but very often they turn up and they become the Hero closer Jo. Let me show you how a real sell salesperson does it and they puff up their chest and they diminish the ah the salesperson they undermine them. Um, so hire. The best people get the best out of them. Make sure they have the tools and resources they need to do their best work every day that doesn't mean being seduced by the technology spaghetti and shiny object syndrome of buying lots of tech. What's the minimum level of technology. You need to do your best work. What are the systems and processes you need to underpin. What you do so that you're free to do your best work and focus on the stuff that matters the most. The fourth 1 is to act as and the point guard. Ah, your job is to protect them from acts of idiocy from your senior leadership and yourself and and help them clear roadblocks. They can't clear on their own and the fifth fifth is to give them a voice. It's to manage inclusively now if every manager's job description was started with those five points and they were measured compensated and rewarded for it. Then the emphasis would be away from training to learning the emphasis would be a way from telling to coaching and you would allow people to fail fast fail early fail often and you don't punish failure which again your persecutor managers. Do. Ah, what you do is you punish hiding it. You keep a failure log everybody writes there's failures in the failure log and on a regular basis you work out. Well right? How do we fix that and stop it from happening again. But that just doesn't happen in most organizations. Why. Because of ego and attachment holding on to what they thought made them successful and you only have to look at the demise of blockbuster and Nokia um, and the rise of yeah and wherever you look. It's that more than not.

    BONUS - 10 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started a Podcast
    2020-08-13 (duration 14m)
    [transcript]
11:31 batch production of your podcast episodes. So anytime that you are producing an episode, there's so much involved there's so many moving pieces that need to happen in a specific order in order for you to create that episode. So you have to start with generating ideas, then you have to Create Outlines or scripts. If you have a scripted podcast, you have to line up interviews, you need to record the episode you need to edit it, you need to upload it you need to schedule it. All of those things take time. What takes even more time. If you do Every single episode by itself, but let's say instead that you scheduled all the interviews that you needed for the entire month, in one week, maybe you had two recorded on Tuesday and two recorded on Thursday. You now have four episodes to start working with that Saturday, you create the outlines for the rest of the episode, you record the narration, put it with your intro in your outro music and you export it, you output it to your podcast host. And now you schedule it out. you've just done a month of content in one week. So if you're looking to optimize and streamline your workflow even more beyond templates, the next best thing to do is to batch your episodes.
10:17 You may think that the best strategy is to put your entire episode up on a social media platform. But actually you want to create teaser content and teaser content gives them a little sound bite, just a little snippet that wets their appetite to want to go listen to the rest of the episode wherever they listen on Apple podcasts or Spotify or what have you. So we're going to talk about what three things are included in every good social media post, the first thing that you need is a visual element. Right? So people are scrolling, they're reading whatever, if you post a picture that causes them to stop, and the idea is that they stopped, they listen, they read, they engage, and the picture of visual element helps them do that. So this can be a graphic, it could be a headshot of your guest. It could be an audiogram The second thing that you need is a good hook. Think about what can I say to make Someone want to continue listening to go check out the full episode. It could be a crazy stat, it could be a really good quote, it can be a couple of bullet points that summarize the high points of the episode, whatever that thing is, put that in the caption to help encourage people to go check out the full episode. And finally a link, you want to include a direct link to that specific podcast episode in your post. If you nail all three of these elements, you'll not only intrigue, new listeners, you'll also encourage existing subscribers to share your posts as well.
07:47 The show notes is the section of your podcast episode that allows you to engage your listeners provides some next steps for those that are ready to take action on what they just listened to. And also persuade someone new to listen To the episode, the number one best practice is to use formatting. Alright, a majority of podcast players like Apple podcasts, Google podcasts, overcast, they support HTML formatting. That means you could put paragraph breaks bullet points, embed links, all the stuff that you need to do to make your show notes look nice, because when your show notes are properly formatted, when it's easy to navigate within your episode description, it makes it easier for your listeners to find what they're looking for. Right, instead of combing through several paragraphs of information, they can just zip down to the list of links that you mentioned, and click on the one that they're looking for. Because remember, when someone goes to your shownotes, your episode description, they're going for a number of reasons. First reason they heard you mentioned something in the podcast and they want to find the link. They want to learn more. They want to buy that product that you recommended. They are looking for a particular piece of information, and they're gonna take action on that. The other reason somebody goes to shownotes your episode description is they're not sure that they want to devote the 30 minutes, 40 minutes hour to listening to the full episode. And so they see the title is interesting. They're curious, they want to learn more, and they go to your show notes to to see some amplifying information to see, is this something that I really want to listen to?

3x Ways to Monetize Your Podcast with Buzzsprout

02:32 Yeah, they do three, Monday, Wednesday, Friday,
02:34 Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 15 minutes on the button. Every episode is 15 minutes on the button, the little cool stopwatch thing that they kick off their podcast with. You can hear the stopwatch start and then at the end that comes in at the end they click it. It's pretty amazing how they get them edited down to 15 minutes. And they talk about everything a lot of stuff in the tech space a lot of stuff in the business space. It's fun it Do they have a way to do like a free trial album. I can't remember if I was able to listen to a free trial before I had to pay the $5
37:19 So at the end of the day, you know, our goal with Buzzsprout is always provide the best premium podcast hosting solution available. And we know that there are other options for hosting podcasts, and some of them don't charge as much and some don't charge any. And we try to provide a much better experience with what we're doing with Buzzsprout. And the idea of hosting your podcast there for some people is a very easy decision because they have the income to be able to buy a Buzzsprout plan and get all the benefits of using a premium podcast host versus having to go with a less expensive or free option. But what we're trying to do is make it more and more accessible. So even if you don't have the disposable income to be able to spend on a passion project or a side hobby or something Like that, there are now ways built into Buzzsprout, to be able to cover the cost of your hosting and possibly equipment and more. So I'm really excited about it, whether support the show link is the right way for you to step into it, or affiliate marketing or sponsorships, that's all built into your Buzzsprout account. Now, that doesn't mean that you have to do any of it. Again, if you no budget wise, it's it's not a stretch for you to buy your own equipment, and to pay for your hosting and you just love doing it. And you've got other goals. We're not pushing you to monetize. But there are a lot of people that out of necessity or because it is one of their goals to have their podcasting goals align more with some monetization options, that we're super excited to be able to offer this to everyone. And it's super simple, just like everything that we do in Buzzsprout we try to keep it really easy and not just make it easy for you to start but scalable as well. So you might just start you know today with the support the show link and then a couple months from now, you might say hey, I'm gonna try an affiliate thing and and you make a few bucks out of that and then you say, Hey, I'm going to pick one of these popcorn sponsors and you know, they can go even beyond that, you know, to the point where you're doing deals, or people are, you know, inbound deals, people are contacting you or you're contacting people outside of popcorn or the other marketplaces that we've linked to. And the tools still support that again. So you can always the ad sponsor tool that's in Buzzsprout. It doesn't have to be somebody that you find through popcorn, it can be somebody find anywhere. So we're excited. We're going to keep revising it. We want to hear your feedback, but we hope it's a super valuable tool to those who are interested in monetization of what they're doing with their podcast.

Spotify Introduces Podcast Charts + Stitcher Sells For $325 Million
    2020-07-17 (duration 40m)
    [transcript]
17:39 Yeah, I agree. Spotify has one of their keys to success has been their ability to push new content. And again, traditionally, music content in front of listeners, right. I've had that same user experience that Alban talks about. Again, I'm not on Spotify, but I do hear what people talk about specifically Spotify Premium subscribers. say that all the time, Spotify is recommending great new music for integrate new artists, great new songs, whatever, it's what they love about it. I think it's interesting how that kind of, you know, Pandora came out with that being their differentiator, and I'm saying that we're using the genome project and we're going to figure out the best songs that you're gonna like the news, things that you haven't heard. And then Spotify kind of came on the scene and kind of overtook them very quickly, and started doing a much better job of doing that. So for them to to apply some of that same technology to podcasts makes a lot of sense. I also think there's a there's a parallel with what the like YouTube's success and YouTube's ability to do that, and we call this like in the content world is called discoverability. Right? Like how can technology or machine learning help with discoverability of new content that you'd be interested in? YouTube has done a fantastic job I mean, to the point where it's like a lot of people now are like concerned about it like they bring like we talked was it last episode we talked about rabbit hole podcast.
16:10 Well, one of the big positives is Spotify is really, really good at surfacing new music. And I'm always jealous because I'm on Apple Music. And my friends that are on Spotify are constantly sending me like, hey, check out this playlist, hey, check out this music. And I'm like, Spotify is definitely surfacing. Better stuff for you, then Apple is surfacing for me as far as like just algorithmically figuring out stuff I like. And this seems like Spotify stepping is going you know, step in that direction, saying, hey, let's just talk about what the best shows are. And so I'm guessing this isn't just some raw numbers. Hey, this podcast you know, Joe Rogan will always be number one in This American Life will always be number two, that they're doing more than just that it's including other statistic to kind of keep it, you know, a fresh listing. So that's pretty cool. And I love like the filtering by countries. I remember, this is an older one. But I remember when I was on Spotify music, just flipping around, I'd go see what was like, you know, what's the top hip hop in the UK? You know it I remember finding different artists that I probably wouldn't have been exposed to in the States. And so it's kind of a cool thing to just flip around and see what's going on in other countries what podcasts are trending and you can be a trendsetter here in the States, if you start telling people about what's the hot new podcasts coming out of Sweden before it's here?

    [transcript]
20:12 Okay, this is one of those deals where you can't go over. You have to be under prices right style
11:59 I definitely agree with That Personally, I've noticed I've used transcripts quite a bit to share podcasts with people. So I can think of quite a few times I listen to this show called conversations with Tyler. And I will go and find pieces of it that I'm like that was a really good part of the conversation. And actually just copy it and share that on Twitter. And I'm sharing that transcript or image of the part of the transcript and then with the episode itself. And it's just a nice way to be able to share a specific piece and kind of give people like, Hey, here's a little taste of what you would get, and why they really would like it. I think that performed pretty well. And then sometimes the audio quality just isn't the best. And so the audio quality isn't the best for a podcast. It's really nice to be able to go read through a transcript, especially if it's a guest, you really want to kind of digest what they're saying, and maybe the audio may not have been working for you for whatever reason.
32:02 n't the one that does the best job, I think of integrating it into their listening experiences overcast, because it's just the you just swipe twice on the screen, and you can get to the chapter marker menu, Apple podcasts supports chapter markers. You just have to scroll down when you're listening. And you'll go past the show notes. And there's a chapter marker section. I don't believe that Spotify supports them. Surprise, surprise, can't listen to us on Spotify. But I'm pretty sure that most of the major podcast apps that pull their shows from Apple podcasts now support chapter mark

SiriusXM Buys A Podcast Host, Spotify Signs Kim Kardashian, and Ximalaya Threatens Chinese Podcasters
    2020-06-19 (duration 46m)
    [transcript]
01:39 So there's a new? Well, it's actually not a new company, but a pivot from an existing company to this new app called pod hero, which is trying to, at least on the surface, seem like it's bridging the gap between luminary, which is an app that's trying to be the Netflix of podcasts where you pay for a subscription, you get exclusive content, trying to bridge the gap between that and Patreon, where it's like purely listener supported. But you have to do a lot of extra work to make that happen. So they they walked through this, they're approaching a medium article that I'll link in the show notes. But it just, it raises the question yet again. podcasters trying to either supplement the costs of putting their podcasts together, or trying to make a little side hustle out of it. What's the best way to do that? And is asking your podcast listeners to directly support your podcast content, a viable option?
14:35 I didn't actually make the connection between Pandora and Sirius. So that's interesting that you said that cap, but you know, my read on it is this Joe Rogan deal? I don't know. I mean, I don't know how much this has actually been affected. Obviously, these talks would have had to been in place for months before, but there is a bit of me that kind of wonders if some of these deals kind of happened a little bit. faster because of Joe Rogan moving to Spotify kind of came out of the blue shop Spotify as stock price up and got everyone kind of opening their eyes to maybe Spotify actually could pull this whole ecosystem together into their own house. And so it makes me think like then, you know, it was like right after that we heard Amazon rumors it was right after that we heard now this deal, Sirius XM seems to be taking podcasting more seriously. And then the next day. Spotify is like, Oh, yeah, we've got another deal. So not only do we have a deal to do podcasts with the Obamas we have a deal with Joe Rogan. we've acquired gimlet and we've acquired the ringer. We've also got one of the biggest celebrities in American culture now joining in starting her own podcast.
44:25 Yep. So we'll definitely keep keep you guys in the loop on industry news that we think is relevant. And, as always, you know, our biggest goal is to help you be successful with your show. And so when we talk about this stuff, it's not to scare you. It's not to, you know, be sensational about something. But it's just to make sure that you're well informed so you can make decisions about your show that benefit the long term health and growth and success of what you're trying to build. That's what's most important to us. Well, that does it for this episode of Buzzcast. thank you as always for tuning in. And listening to us talk about podcasting. If you want to be a part of a community of other podcasters that are trying to help each other and sharing tips and strategies and valuable insights and encouragement, the best way to do that is to join our Facebook group, the Buzzsprout podcast community. It's a fantastic place to get all of your questions answered, and to celebrate your successes and get any support that you need. That does it for this week, and we'll catch in the next one.

Amazon Podcasts? + Buzzsprout's New Descript Integration

    [transcript]
13:36 absolutely so the professional use only podcast is to black women lawyers discussing the highs and lows of being professional women in today's corporate America. Awesome. Very
02:16 It's kind of remarkable to me now I'm thinking you just said that I'm like, Whoa, it's been like over two months since we've been in the same room. Like, it's just it will be it'll be like 2021 before we record again in the same room, but uh, yeah, it's nice to see you guys over here via squad cast and record this episode.
45:17 You know, as we talked about the different ways that all of these companies are engaging with podcasts, I'm noticing all the Google Play Music is going to be is being moved into YouTube Music. And it kind of made me think about, you know, so much podcasting, quote, unquote, podcasting is on YouTube. You know, the original reasons why we launched five minute Mondays, which is now Podcasting Q&A, was to ourselves experiment about what's the best way to a podcast content on YouTube. And so I thought maybe we could do a bit of like a after action report and maybe Travis you could speak a little bit to how we have taken this content. That was a Originally for podcasting, and are using it on YouTube, and what we think our best way to do that is,

Joe Rogan Moves To Spotify (And What It Means For Independent Podcasters)
    2020-05-22 (duration 59m)
    [transcript]
33:22 Yeah, we built transcripts into Buzzsprout. The reason transcripts are helpful is you can take your audio content that you work so hard to make and turn it into a blog post or use it for search engine optimization and that kind of stuff. But to me recently raised their prices, so it became less ideal to use that service. So then we rolled out our own. And we were using we had our own transcripts built up, and we're offering it as a free feature for people to test out. But it wasn't as accurate as some of the other machine transcribes. So Kevin, why don't you catch us up on what the latest iteration of Buzzsprout transcripts is? And why we think in the long run, this is going to be the best solution for for podcasters.
03:17 Yeah. So I think it's good just to lay out the exactly what we know about the deal so far. So Joe Rogan came out said podcast is moving to Spotify. September by September, they're gonna have the entire 11 year backlog of episodes. That's all gonna be on Spotify. And then by the end of the year, so sometime a little bit before 2021, the show and the video so everything on YouTube will be exclusive to Spotify. And that's a pretty big deal. We're talking millions of views on YouTube millions of downloads per episode. Joe Rogan experience is considered by many to be The number one podcast in the world, maybe not everyone's favorite podcast in the world, but it's definitely the largest, he has the most downloads per episode. So it's a really big win for Spotify to be able to do that. This is coming from somebody who, for years said, you know, it's all smoke and mirrors over there, Spotify, you don't make enough money when you stream with them. And the deal that at least the details of the deal that we've seen, make it like you make a ton of money and you move to Spotify. If you're Joe Rogan. It's a multiple year licensing deal. So Spotify is not buying the Joe Rogan experience. They're just going to be the exclusive provider of the show for multiple years. We don't know how many multiple years so it's more like when Netflix licenses friends than when they create their own show or buy a show. That money side of it is somewhere north of 100 million dollars. I saw the Wall Street Journal posted. And then I've seen another source that said, it's probably going to be closer to 200 million by the time that it all pans out. So it's a lot of money. And it definitely signaling a huge change for the podcasting industry.
18:51 Yeah, and that is the only way that this deal makes sense for Spotify. I think it's good to go back to Kevin's example with Howard Stern and serious XM, that when he signed that deal, the whole thing that was in it for Sirius was, hey, nobody really is doing this whole listening to, you know, online, whatever, satellite radio. But maybe if we bring the million people which is about what it was, who listened to Howard Stern every day and make them buy his extra hardware and set this up and get a subscription, then maybe we'll start having a viable business model, because we will bring all that together. And after they did that was when I think they merged with XM. And then they had one single platform. Spotify wants to do that they're not buying Joe Rogan for hundreds of millions of dollars because they think, hey, the 11 million downloads he gets are going to make us so much money in ads that we actually will make it on this deal. It's not a they're not doing that. They're saying we're going to move the 11 million people that listen to Joe every month. off of another platform, onto Spotify. And then when this deal runs out and for, you know, in four years or whatever it will be, they will still be here. And if Joe moves back to his old host and his old feed, even then when he's doing that, it will, they will still stay on Spotify. And then they will have the ability to run dynamic ads around the podcast. And you know, that way they're able to bring everything together. Yeah. So the way it makes sense for them is if their goal is to try to win and try to win so that they can be the middleman brokering all the ad deals in the podcasting space, and all the content in the podcasting space.

18:19 Yeah. And I know for me, whenever I've done guest podcasts, I always, at least try and get a sense of the general topic, right? I never like I never like to go in blind. Because as a guest, I want to make sure that I can be the best guest that I possibly can. And so I think that that's spot on with just like a really good approach is be as prepared as you can. But then don't feel like you have to stick to your talking points or your script that you've created. You really still want to be conversational as well.
36:57 Well and the other thing that is great about those cites is that the prices are more stable than on Amazon because often what happens with Amazon is let's say that they typically ship road PSA1 boom arms from their warehouse for the MSRP of 99 bucks. If they run out and it's only resellers, you'll see the price go up, it won't be $99 anymore. Now it's $119 $125 $135 to buy that same boom arm on Amazon, but because you're buying it from some reseller, they can charge whatever they want. I think we're seeing this with the webcam industry right now, if you buy a webcam on Amazon, they're just exorbitantly expensive. And so going to these other websites, you're not going to run into that issue, it's going to be the normal price. And so you can be confident that's the best price for the gear that you're trying to get.
06:06 So the first thing we wanted to talk about was actually just revisit something that we talked about in the last episode, which was the new magic mastering feature that we put a lot of work into, to really make it as easy and amazing as possible. And to this point, since we launched it, we have over 1000 hours of audio processed using magic mastering. Hundreds of people are using it now for their podcast. And so we've been really encouraged by the adoption and the feedback that we're getting. I just want to read a couple posts that we've seen here in the Facebook group, talking about it, the first one from Carrie and Reed Brown. Who said, has anyone checked out the new magic mastering feature? If you haven't, you must try it out. I just uploaded an episode with very blatant volume discrepancies. I'm loud and the guest is low. I put it through magic bass string and voila, the loving love And loudness is fixed. I'm super excited about this new tool, and lots of other comments and posts like that. So it's been cool to see. Not only do you guys like it, but you really, really like it. And so Kevin, I wanted to throw it to you as someone who was really integral in rolling this feature out, like what are some best practices for people as you're using it to really get the full potential of the feature? And then just some common things that we're seeing that are kind of like some low hanging fruit for people to really take full advantage of it.
